How Much Do BMW Cars Weigh? (All Models)

BMW is the abbreviation of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. Together with Mercedes Benz and Audi, it is considered one of the Big Three German automobile manufacturers.

Since producing their first cars in the 1930s and being banned from producing after World War 2, the company has developed a wide range of prestige vehicles. But, how much does each BMW weigh?

The average weight of a BMW car is 4,276 lbs (1939 kg). The heaviest BMW model is the BMW i7 xDrive60 at 5,917 lbs (2683 kg) and the lightest model is the BMW Z4 sDrive30i at 3,314 lbs (1503 kg)

While BMW is also renowned for its innovative motorcycles, its wide range of luxury cars has created a name for the company as a leader in the global automotive industry.

We have drawn up tables of the over seventy different 2023 models available in the US, divided into design categories, which give the exact curb weight and weight distribution for each model.

Here’s a summary of the average weight from the different BMW model series:

Details Of The Weight Of BMW Cars

Because of the very extensive range of vehicles, we have divided the weight data into separate tables for:

  • The SUV range, designated by an X in the model description
  • The cars, including sedans, coupes, and convertibles, ranging from the 2-series to the 8-series
  • The Z sports car series
  • The electric series  of SUVs and cars

Weight Of The X-Series Models

The first X-series produced by BMW was the X5, its first-ever SUV which debuted in 1999. The range has been expanded to include the compact X1 and X3 through to the luxurious X8, their flagship SUV with a level of comfort that takes it into Rolls Royce and Maybach territory.

Because no release date has been announced, we have yet to include the X8 in our table, but it’s worth watching out for!

The full range of BMW X’s is available in 4-wheel drive (known as X-drive in BMW’s vocabulary), with 2-wheel drive an option in some of the smaller models. There is an electric version of the X5 available in 2023.

Luxury, comfort, and sporty performance across the range make the X-series of SUVs a popular choice, with the X3 being BMW’s top seller in the USA.

Weight Of The 2-Series BMW

The 2-series was introduced in 2014 when BMW chose to separate its 2-door 1-series models into a separate series.

They were offered first in coupe and convertible form, but the range has expanded to include the 4-door Gran Coupe model in two versions and the X-drive all-wheel drive system.

Also included is the M2, with a 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder motor, with an output of 453 HP, and quite possibly the last BMW performance coupe with a purely internal combustion engine powertrain.

The convertible is no longer offered in the US, and the Tourer and Gran Tourer will also not be available in 2023. Generally, however, there have been no significant changes from the 2022 line-up.

The Weight Of The 3-Series BMW

Probably best described as a compact sports sedan, the 3-series range is powered by either a 2-liter 4-cylinder motor or a 3-liter 6-cylinder. A hybrid in the range is also offered, with a 2-liter engine and an integrated electric motor.

The 340i, powered by a 382 hp in-line 6-cylinder, is also augmented by a 48-volt electric motor in a mild hybrid combination.

Top of the range is the M3, also powered by the 3.0-liter motor but performance-tuned to give a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds. In 2023 a special edition of only 500 will be sold in the US to commemorate 50 years of the M-sport division at BMW.

The Weight Of The 4-Series BMW

The 4-series BMW range is a spin-off from the 3-series and the creation of a separate series of 2-door coupe models.

The range has now developed into the coupe, Gran coupe, and convertible models, with two engine choices, as well as the all-wheel X-drive and M-competition performance models.

For those who need full four-seat passenger space, there are better choices than the 4 series. The 3-series sedan on which these coupes are based is more practical and has more luggage capacity. Road manners are no better than the 3-series, but for sheer style and good looks, the 4-series is a winner.

The Weight Of The 5-Series BMW

The %-series is a limited range of executive sports sedans. They have been updated for 2023, with a wide range of engine options, evolutionary rather than revolutionary exterior design changes, and with the high-performance M5 included in the mix.

A significant change is expected for the 5-series in 2024. Some aspects of the 2023 models have been affected by supply chain problems (park assist, for example, is not included in the package).

Still, the cars remain remarkably quick for their size and extremely comfortable, quality mid-sized executive sedans.

The Weight Of The 7-Series BMW

The 7-series sedan is the prestige flagship of BMW’s 4-door range and is one of the finest full-sized executive sedans in the world.

Available with a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder motor producing 375 hp or a 536hp 4.4 liter V8, the performance is matched by exceptional handling, a limousine-like comfort level, and the latest technology, including  BMW’s  Curved Display, which comprises a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The 2023 7-series has been completely redesigned and is bigger in every dimension compared to its predecessor. Several additional models are expected to be introduced during the course of 2023.

The Weight Of The 8-Series BMW

The 8-series is the coupe version of the 7-series. It has been lightly refreshed for 2023 – “lightly” because one change is the illumination of the sizeable kidney-shaped grille.

The range includes the coupe and gran coupe body styles and the 3-liter 6-cylinder or V8 engines in various stages of tune ranging from 335 hp to a massive 617hp in the M8 Competition.

The  Weight Of The Z4 BMW

One of the few genuine roadsters still available to enthusiasts, the Z4 has been updated for 2023 in terms of exterior details. It epitomizes the BMW slogan “pure driving pleasure.”

Available with the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine as well as the 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder, performance remains the strong suit of the Z4, with 0-60mph times of 5.2 seconds and 4.4 seconds, respectively.

The Weight Of The i-Range BMWs

We have included a table showing the 2023 pure electric vehicles offered for 2023. All models, except for the e-drive 35 and e-drive 40, are fitted with dual electric motors.

The iX M60, the i4 M50, and the i7 M60, are high-performance motors, with the i7 achieving a 0-60mph time of 4.1 seconds.

Conclusion

There are over eighty individual models in BMW’s 2023 line-up that are available in the US market, so buyers are spoilt for choice.

Weight is one aspect of a car’s suitability. For those who need this information, we hope the tables we have drawn up prove helpful.

I listed the horsepower of all the available BMW models here and the fuel economy of all their cars in this post.
